  • provide local contact support for users of the reflectometer MARIA of JCNS at MLZ
  • contribute to the improvement of the reflectometer
  • conduct and disseminate world-class research via publications and conference presentations in thin film magnetism and/or magnetic nanoparticles
  • represent and actively work on increasing the user base at MLZ
  • guidance and supervision of the MARIA and the thin film team
  • bring in and pursue new strategic research topics in thin magnetic film and/or nanoparticle Technology

Introduction

You will participate in an international project that connects the ILL (France), Hamburg/DESY (Germany), New York University (USA), and the University of Canterbury (New Zealand). The project is funded by a prestigious grant from the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) to Keele University (UK) and will link to the one of the most important European facility developments in a generation – the creation of an X-ray laser source (XFEL, Hamburg). HFSP grants are awarded to teams having strong complementary expertise and who propose highly innovative research. This intercontinental collaboration links established neutron and X-ray approaches for the study of biological systems with those now emerging at X-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL) facilities and addresses the challenge of imaging single fibrous biological macromolecules.

Duties
You will be located within ILL’s Life Sciences Group and play a crucial role in the preparation of samples as well as carrying out experiments at the ILL and ESRF in Grenoble, the LCLS FEL source at Stanford University (USA), and the new XFEL facility in Hamburg. Your main tasks will be to:

  • Carry out extensive sample preparation work – proteins, nucleic acids, filamentous complexes
  • Perform diffraction experiments at different facilities such as ILL and ESRF in Grenoble – France, X-FEL in Hamburg, and Stanford
  • Analyse data as required
  • Prepare papers for scientific press
  • Contribute to workshops, conferences, etc.

Post-Doctoral contract of 18 months, renewable for a further 6 to 18-month period.

Qualifications and experience
You should have an appropriate undergraduate background (eg physical or life sciences) and a PhD in a relevant area. You are competent in molecular biology and biochemistry techniques as well as in sample preparation. You are also familiar with data collection (eg crystallography, SAXS/SANS) methods and have a good general grasp of biophysical techniques.

Language skills
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.

Primary responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to enhance the existing neutron scattering program by participating in existing neutron scattering research projects and being involved in upkeep and maintenance of the existing suite of instruments. He/she is encouraged to initiate an active research program of his/her own in Condensed Matter Physics/Materials Science primarily utilizing MURR’s instruments.

Task description
The neutron therapy facility MEDAPP is a worldwide unique tool for irradiation of tumours with fission neutrons. Due to the special application, neither an established treatment planning system, nor a solution of other neutron therapy facilities can be used for treatment planning.
Using existing preliminary works, the concept should be further developed towards a real, initially retrospective application. It includes verification of the beam parameters, comparison and implementation of suitable models to derive the tissue composition from CT/MR data sets, and selection as well as validation of an appropriate code for dose calculation. An intuitive user interface and the provision of commonly used evaluation tools conclude the project. With this implementation, a considerably improved evaluation of the patient-specific dose distribution is possible, especially concerning the impact on healthy tissue and organs at risk.

Benefits
Admission to the program will include an original qualification concept featuring a set of compulsory and eligible training activities, to ensure not only academic excellence and scientific independence but also the development of fundamental personal effectiveness. The project is a multidisciplinary task, including measurements, algorithm development, theoretical considerations and code development. Introduction

Laboratory for Quantum Magnetism at EPFL and Laboratory for Neutron Scattering and Imaging at PSI are looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Neutron Spectroscopy

The chosen candidate will be responsible for completion and scientific exploitation of the novel neutron spectrometer CAMEA. This spectrometer built in collaboration between LQM at EPFL and PSI is scheduled to receive first neutrons ultimo 2018 and to be fully commissioned in 2020 after the complete upgrade of neutron guides at the SINQ continuous spallation source in 2019.

Job description

The main tasks will include

  • Managing the construction project in close collaboration with the technical project team, commission the instrument, and design software for instrument control and data-analysis
  • Perform experiments in collaboration with team-members from LQM, PSI and external users.
  • Contribute to the analysis, interpretation and publication of the experiments

MURR® is a multidisciplinary center with the three-fold mission of promoting research in the sciences and engineering, providing educational and training opportunities for students, and providing irradiation and isotope production services.

As the highest-powered research reactor on a US campus, MURR® is a 10 MW light water moderated reactor that operates 24 hours per day, 6 1/2 days per week, 52 weeks per year. The MURR® Center operates with ~200 research, professional, and technical staff and self-generates 90% of its annual budget. The scientific programs at the MURR® Center span a broad spectrum of research disciplines and techniques that include archaeometry, neutron activation analysis, neutron scattering, epidemiology and immunology, diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals, material sciences, and nuclear engineering. These scientific programs are carried out by research scientists at MURR® and those from around the globe. Job description

The selected individual will devise and implement the tactics necessary to realize the University’s vision for this unique national resource: continued safe and reliable operation to provide quality nuclear services and products to both the research and global community. The selected individual will also be responsible for engaging academic departments on campus and clearly advocating the reactor’s role in the University mission of education and research excellence.

The Executive Director will be responsible for the overall operation of MURR® Center including Reactor Operations, Health Physics, Quality Assurance/Quality Control, Product and Service Operations, Business Development, Fiscal and Administrative Services, as well as continued support of the research and scientific programs.

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership in managing a diverse staff in a heavily regulated environment. The Executive Director is responsible for the physical security and emergency planning for the facility, both of which are governed by Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)-approved plans, and must be familiar with the federal regulations that govern access to and control of a nuclear facility. The successful candidate must fully accept and endorse a nuclear safety culture as mandated by the U.S. NRC. This position is responsible for interacting with the NRC including interactions pertaining to reactor licensing items and coordinating with local, state, and federal agencies as necessary.

The Executive Director will oversee business aspects and set strategic direction for MURR’s interface with industry for product development and income-generating products and services with a comprehensive knowledge of business functions such as marketing, PR, and finance and have an entrepreneurial mindset.

Introduction

This PhD work deals with studies of magnetic and structural properties skyrmion hosting materials. Focus will be on a new class of skyrmion hosting materials, frustrated magnets, where a great variety of novel magnetic phases with non-trivial topology is expected. The aim is to understand the microscopic behaviour in the bulk by combining magnetization and susceptibility measurements with elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The samples will be made available through collaborations.

TU Delft is seeking an outstanding and enthusiastic researcher with a MSc in Physics. The successful candidate combine creativity, flexibility, hands-on attitude for experimental work and has the ability to co-operate within an interdisciplinary and international research group. He/She will perform magnetic properties characterization experiments (in-house) as well as state-of-the-art scattering experiments at national and international large-scale facilities. He/She will perform the data analysis, interpret the results, publish them in high profile journals and present them at national and international conferences.

Conditions of employment

When fulfilling a PhD position at NWO-I, the Institutes Organisation of NWO, you will get the status of junior scientist.
You will have an employee status and can participate in all the employee benefits NWO-I offers. You will get a contract for four years. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 2,834 euro gross per month. The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8 percent and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33 percent.
You are supposed to have a thesis finished at the end of your four year term with NWO-I.
A training programme is part of the agreement. You and your supervisor will make up a plan for the additional education and supervising that you specifically need. This plan also defines which teaching activities you will be responsible (up to a maximum of ten percent of your time). Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Level 2 manager for RF Systems within the Proton Power Upgrade Project, reporting to the PPU Project Director. Project responsibilities to include:
    • technical integration of the RF Systems scope of work
    • management of Level 3 project managers
    • development of cost and schedule estimates
    • maintenance and follow-up of risk register and action items from reviews
    • presentation of RF Systems scope in reviews (Advisory, Dept. of Energy, and Readiness)
  • Serve as Project Engineer within the Electrical and RF Systems Group
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values, ethics, and diversity

Work Directions and Interfaces

    Preferred Qualifications:
